Caring for a Teak Shed

Teak Care

Teak requires no care and maintenance, right? Well, that depends on whether you want to preserve teak’s original colour and how clean you want to keep it. In every case, teak is undoubtedly the most convenient type of wood for any outdoor use and the basic teak shed care will not take much of your precious time nor energy.

Teak shed will outlast all types of wood no matter if you treat it or leave it to age. However, you need to decide whether you want to preserve its distinctive golden-brown colour or allow it to change into silvery-grey as soon as you buy it. Why? Because you have to seal it with teak oil before it starts ageing though it is also possible to restore the original colour even if the so-called weathering process has already started. Apply teak oil to your shed once to two times per year and it will look as new for many years to come. Remember that teak is naturally resistant to water, mould and termites which means that you do not need to treat it with any water sealers and varnishes. Also, keep in mind that you should clean teak with a mild soapy water before applying teak oil and allow it to dry completely. To avoid sealing in the water, wait for 48 hours before you apply teak oil.

Teak Care

You cannot avoid occasional cleaning of your teak shed no matter if you apply teak oil annually or not because teak is not resistant to dirt. It may be a good idea to build at least 20 centimetres longer and wider shed base or lay decorative stones around it to prevent the soil from collecting on the lower portion of your shed. However, there is no way to avoid dirt and dust from accumulating on the exterior of your shed over time, especially if you live in a windy area. Fortunately, dirt and dust can be removed very easily by mild soapy water and sometimes by clean soft cloth only. If you do this from time to time before it gets too severe, you will need few minutes only to clean your teak shed.

A teak shed requires minimal care since you do not have to protect it from water, the sun nor insects thanks to teak’s natural resistance to all the mentioned factors that are responsible for deterioration of most types of wood. Teak shed is a great investment, especially if you are looking for a wood shed that looks beautiful and requires minimal care at the same time.
